Minister attends Drug Burning Ceremony arranged by Anti Narcotics Force
Islamabad, October 15, 2015 (PPI-OT): Minister of State Engineer Muhammad Baligh Ur Rehman attended the Drug Burning Ceremony as a Chief Guest arranged by Anti Narcotics Force at DHA, Valley Islamabad today. I am pleased to witness this important event which assures that good is being promoted, said the Minister. It enables us to come together and pledge to fight against this menace of drugs.
We have come a long way in our fight against drugs, our firm zero tolerance stance and comprehensive approach of tackling drugs has worked well for us. Further he added that we have kept our fields and mountains free from poppy but unfortunately regional situation specially mass production of narcotics in Afghanistan (Producer of 75% of world’s total opiate production) have been challenging for us.
Use of drugs jolt the nations badly, we are fully aware of its harm, stated the minister. Number of addicts in Pakistan has touched the figure of approximately 6.4 million. Illicit drug trade undermines governance, institutions and societal cohesion. Minister of State said that to counter this situation ANF (Anti Narcotics Force) is making constant efforts towards building a drug free society. The magnitude and complexity of the problem warrants concerted efforts by the government, civil society through a multi pronged and well integrated strategy.
Today drug burning ceremony where drugs of billions of dollars were burnt, speaks of efforts and accomplishment of ANF in fighting against drug trafficking, said the State Minister. Knowing the importance of this force Government of Pakistan has increased the budget of ANF to 50%. ANF filed 1337 drugs related cases, arrested 1642 people involved in drug trafficking, and confiscated 345.54 tons of drugs of the value of trillions of rupees in international market in 2014-2015.
Minister of State said that we value International expectations and are determined to abide by all international laws and UN Conventions. We have already signed MOUs with 32 countries in this regard. Efforts of Pakistan has been fully acknowledged by the international community and we expect complete cooperation from the world in order to make our land free of this peril.
Renowned people from sports and arts; Jamal Shah, Umar Gul, Fahad Mehboob, Shahnaz Sheikh also spoke on the occasion and talked about physical and creative activities to get rid of this menace. Minister of State assured them that government is giving due importance to civics, creativity, character building and physical and sports activities in National Action Plan and in National Education Policy, which would help our youth to be on the right track.
In the end Minister of State thanked the director General ANF Major General Khawer Hanif for his brilliant leadership under which ANF did a great job. He also admired the efforts of civil society, youth and media who are working for the betterment of society by making it free from this threat.
