Ministry of Environment Initiates Pilot Project to Avail Carbon Credits in the Country

Islamabad: Pakistan Environmental Protection Agency, Ministry of Environment is taking initiatives to avail carbon credit facility for all Brick Kilns owners after getting the Red Zone free from kilns. This was stated by Director General Pak-EPA, Asad Ullah Faiz while chairing a meeting with the representatives of Brick Kilns Association.

Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) and other technical experts of the Ministry of Environment were also present on the occasion.

During the meeting, It was appreciated that with the cooperation of Brick Kiln association and efforts of Pak-EPA, Red Zone area marked around Benazir Bhutto Shaheed International Airport, Islamabad has been got cleared from Brick Kilns Pollution problem. It was observed that 45 Brick Kiln in Red Zone have stopped their operation.

D.G Pak-EPA said that the Ministry of Environment is in the process to initiate a pilot project for availing carbon credits facility in the country to bring foreign investors, and latest technologies in order to reduce carbon level. During the meeting, a detail discussion held with the Association of brick kilns on adoption of zig zag technology which will help in reducing pollution / carbon as well as they can sell their carbon credits to the foreign investors and can earn foreign exchange. He was of the view that, this facility will be definitely helpful to keep the Environment safe and clean in the country. Currently, other countries of our region are already availing this facility significantly and earning huge amount of foreign exchange.

Members of the Association lauded the efforts of Ministry of Environment and agreed to work together with government departments by initiating pilot project.
