Lahore, February 23, 2013 (PPI-OT): The 100 KM road cycle race, a thrilling event of 60th National Cycling Championship was contested in a high spirit despite of bad weather conditions as it rained throughout the race on an extremely slippery road. Some 50 cyclists from 8 participating teams were waived off by the President PCF Munawar Baseer Ahmad at 9.00 am, who took off on a rapid start of the 13 km circuit in Phase VIII of DHA. Initially a group of 45 riders broke away from the main contingent and subsequently 2 lead groups were formed with the first one consisting of 5 and second consisting of 12 riders.

A keen competition was witnessed amongst the riders throughout the race who constantly tried to break away by maintaining a high speed in spite of the rain and slippery road conditions. It was a job well done by the organising committee, duly supported by DHA authorities as no injuries were sustained even though some cyclists collided a few times at the U turns.

Mohammad Sajid of Pakistan Army clinched the gold medal by finishing the race in 02:42:04 and was closely followed by SSGC’s Naimat Ali who bagged silver by finishing in 02:42:24. Ghulam Abass of Pakistan Army won the third position to take the bronze in 02:44:36.

The Organizing Committee in adherence to UCI rules conducted the race under the supervision of International Cyclist, Nusrat Khan. To hold the race as per schedule is an international practice for 100 KM cycle race in world cycling events such as Tour-de-France, the Olympic road events, etc.

President PCF Mr. Munawar Baseer Ahmad and Secretary Syed Azhar Ali Shah along with the members of national selection committee closely monitored the performance of cyclists to finalise the National team that will contest in the 33rd Asian Cycling Championship in India, next month.

SSGC in its capacity as host of 60th Championship professionally managed various arrangements with regards to security and traffic management by ensuring clear paths for cyclists without any traffic interruption, especially at the turning points. DHA administration duly facilitated this 100 KM race by granting NOC and by deploying their security personnel and traffic wardens.

Overall in the four days of Championship, Sui Southern Gas Company is leading the points table and is closely followed by Pakistan Army and Punjab on second and third berths, respectively. On Sunday, the last day of championship, the following events will be held;
