Mustafa Nawaz Khokhar meets Dutch ambassador for human rights

Islamabad, March 04, 2013 (PPI-OT): Dutch Ambassador for Human Rights, Mr. Lionel Veer called on the Advisor to Prime Minister on Human Rights, Mr. Mustafa Nawaz Khokhar. A variety of issues relating to human rights came under discussion. The Advisor briefed him about various initiatives taken by the present government to improve the human rights situation in Pakistan. While pointing out international commitments, the Advisor said, out of Nine International covenants Pakistan has signed and ratified Seven. He further said that the most credible thing that government has done in the field of human rights is lifting of the reservations on ICCPR that ensures freedom of expression, freedom of information freedom of religion etc. More over the Advisor said that the establishment of financially and administratively autonomous National Commission for Human Rights and National Commission on the Status of Women are also mentionable steps taken by the present democratically elected government to improve the human rights scenario in Pakistan. He also apprised him that in order to ensure the protection of women comprehensive legislation has been done that includes the Prevention of Anti-Women Practices Act, Acid Control and Acid Crime Prevention Act and Laws on Sexual Harassment.

The Dutch Ambassador appreciated the efforts of the Advisor for taking effective steps for improving human rights situation in Pakistan and showed resolve to cooperate in the field of human rights issues to which the Advisor agreed.

Later the UN Resident Coordinator Mr. Timo Pakala and ILO representative Mr. Francesco also called on the Advisor and discussed the action plan of collaboration between the UN and the Ministry of Human Rights for the year 2013. It was agreed that there should be more interaction between the UN and the govt. of Pakistan to appease the human rights situation in various parts of the country. While discussing the significance of the UPR (Universal Periodic Report) the Advisor recommended that there must be a mechanism of continuous dialogue and interaction among the member states on the status of recommendations.
