National Assembly Speaker Asks Pakistani Expatriates to Come Forward and Help Flood Affectees in Sindh
Islamabad: Dr. Fehmida Mirza, Speaker National Assembly has urged upon the Pakistani Expatriates across the world to come forward and help their brethren affected by floods in Sindh.
She said that their support would help the government to deal with the immense magnitude of the devastation caused by rains and subsequent floods. She said this during a meeting with community members and journalists in Dubai according to message received from UAE.
While talking to the Pakistani expatriates, she said that despite critical flood situation in Sindh and especially Badin, she had chosen to come here with only one objective — to inform overseas Pakistanis as well as the international community about the worsening flood situation in the province of Sindh and to appeal for help because the situation has gone beyond the available resources in the country. Dr. Fehmida Mirza said that Floods have left huge number of population homeless, triggering another international aid effort. “Though the scale of the disaster and the aid response is much less than last
year, the misery for those affected is just as real,” she noted.
Giving the ordeal of the flood affectees, the Speaker said that out of the total of 1.8 million people of Badin, at least 1.6 million are affected. She said that dozens of villages have been wiped out by flood waters and we have now no high ground left even to set up rescue camps. She said that there has been a colossal damage to the district’s infrastructure in terms of roads network, transport, schools, colleges, health facilities and other offices.
She said that she was grateful to Pakistanis in the UAE who have promptly responded to her call in past. She said that the Pakistani community in the UAE should come forward and evoke the same spirit which they showed during devastating earthquake of 2005 and floods in 2010. She requested the Pakistani community to donate food items, tents, plastic sheets, water purification equipment and medicines. She also asked them to adopt a family and even a village and can provide aid directly to them.
Dr. Fehmida Mirza also met UAE Minister of Foreign Trade Sheikha Lubna bint Khalid Al Qasimi in Abu Dhabi. While talking to the UAE Minister, the Speaker thanked the His Highness President Shaikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan for standing beside Pakistan in times of trial, especially during the natural disasters that struck several parts of the country.
Sheikha Lubna assured the Speaker of UAE’s continued assistance to Pakistan in this critical juncture. She said that UAE firms in Pakistan as well as the Pakistani companies in the UAE would extend maximum support to flood affectees.
Dr. Fehmida Mirza is visiting Dubai along with her husband Dr. Zulfiqar Mirza to raise funds for the flood-affected people in Badin. She also met UAE officials and community members in Abu Dhabi in separate meetings.
