Islamabad, December 14, 2012 (PPI-OT): The award ceremony for the 2012 Nobel Peace Prize to the European Union was held in Oslo on 10 December, with 21 European leaders in attendance. The prize, together with the Human Rights Day, was also celebrated the same day in Islamabad with a joint EU-Norway event.

The event was opened with a speech by the Norwegian Ambassador Cecilie Landsverk congratulating the EU with the Peace Prize, followed by a statement from the EU Ambassador Lars-Gunnar Wigemark.

H.E. Mustafa Khokar, adviser to the Prime Minister on Human Rights, also shared his reflections on the awarding of the Nobel Peace Prize to the EU and the Human Rights Day.

The EU has decided to award the prize money to projects dedicated to children affected by war and conflict, and at the event in Islamabad the EU Delegation and the Embassy of Norway organised a debate about “Children affected by war and armed conflict”.

Four panellists, Dr Pervez Hoodbhoy from School of Science and Engineering, LUMS, DHA, Valerie Khan Yousufzai from Acid Survivers Foundation, Mr I.A. Rehman from Human Rights Commission in Pakistan and Ms Saba Ismail from Aware Girls reflected on the impact of conflict and war on the well-being of children. The interesting and enlightening debate especially touched upon issues related to challenges related to children in Pakistan.

The ceremony was concluded by the Ambassador of Norway awarding 1,7 million rupies to Deputy Director Mr. Tariq Khursheed Malik of Beit ul-Mal Pakistan, an official organization dedicated giving shelter and education to orphans. Their Sweet Homes for boys now shelter around 3000 children, and the award will be used to equip the first “Sweet Home” for girls to be opened in Islamabad in January next year.
