Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority warns TV Channels on Content Violations
Islamabad: Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) today has issued strict warning to TV channels including Royal TV, Play TV, OYE TV, Oxygen TV and Indus Music who despite of repeated instruction and advices were flouting their content provisions in disregard to their respective license categories.
As per terms & conditions of license, a TV channel can broadcast upto 10% of total foreign content which constitutes maximum 2 hours and forty minutes duration in total broadcast of 24 hours. Whereas, the channels e.g. Play TV, OYE, Indus Music and Oxygen were observed airing excessive foreign content on their channels beyond the permissible limit which sometimes contained vulgar and indecent content.
Similarly, Royal TV has been granted license for entertainment category but the channels has been persistently airing news and current affairs programme in sheer disregard to its license category. The channels have been issued reasonable notices / warnings in past but no visible compliance was witnessed on their part.
The Authority in its last meeting that took place on July 26 this year had taken serious notice of such violations and had decided to impose fine of Rs. One million on all TV channels involved in repeat violation after giving them reasonable warning and time to address their misconduct.
The Authority has given final deadline of 30 days to above mentioned channels to correct their content as per mandate of their respective license failing which PEMRA shall be initiating action against the violators as per law which may lead to revocation of licenses.
