New York:Pakistan has reiterated its opposition to the creation of additional individual permanent seats on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC).
According to Radio Pakistan, the remarks were made by Pakistan's Acting Permanent Representative to the UN, Usman Jadoon, during a speech at the UN General Assembly plenary meeting on Security Council reforms.
The Ambassador emphasized that the reforms should address existing imbalances rather than entrench historical privileges or create new centers of exclusive power. He pointed out that permanent membership and the veto have contributed to the Security Council's paralysis and inability to effectively respond to threats to international peace and security. Jadoon argued that expanding the permanent category, with or without veto powers, would perpetuate inequality rather than democratize the Council.
He advocated for expanding the elected, non-permanent category as a more democratic and inclusive path forward.
