Pakistan Signs Pact to Mitigate Nitric Acid Emissions, Bolstering Global Climate Efforts

Islamabad: In a significant stride toward environmental sustainability, the Ministry of Climate Change and Environmental Coordination has signed the Nitric Acid Climate Action Group (NACAG) Statement of Undertaking, aiming to substantially reduce nitrous oxide emissions from the nation’s nitric acid production sectors. The ceremony, graced by dignitaries from the German Embassy and GIZ Pakistan, underscores a major commitment by Pakistan to curb one of the most potent greenhouse gases.

According to Press Information Department, the event highlighted Pakistan’s collaboration with international bodies and its alignment with global climate goals. Romina Khurshid Alam, the Prime Minister’s Coordinator on Climate Change, articulated the government’s long-term strategies for reducing emissions within the sector. The agreement facilitates financial support from NACAG for the installation of catalysts and measuring technology at Fatima Fertilizers’ Multan Plant, marking a pivotal development in the country’s efforts to combat climate change.

The initiative positions Pakistan as the 11th nation to join this global pact, with the projected reduction of over four million tons of CO2 equivalent emissions annually in the nitric acid sector. The move is part of a broader commitment to align national actions with the Paris Agreement, enhancing the synergy between climate action and industrial development. The support from the German government and GIZ, including a significant financial contribution, emphasizes the role of international cooperation in achieving these ambitious environmental targets.

The signing ceremony not only celebrated the strides in environmental policy but also set a precedent for the private sector’s engagement in national climate goals, highlighting the essential role of industry in fostering sustainable development and environmental stewardship.
