Pakistan Steel Re-Rolling Mills Association concerned over suspension of electricity and gas
Lahore, January 09, 2013 (PPI-OT): Pakistan Steel Re-Rolling Mills Association (PSRMA) Wednesday expressed grave concern over suspension of electricity and gas that is causing massive retrenchments and lay-offs in the re-rolling industry besides incurring huge financial loss to the millers.
In a statement issued here, the PSRMA Vice Chairman Mian Murad Ashraf said that Steel Millers were shocked by the abrupt electricity suspension because they were already without gas and unable to understand logic behind such thoughtless decisions.
The PSRMA Vice Chairman feared unrest among steel industry workers and violent protests as a result of downsizing due to power shortage.
Mian Murad Ashraf said that the suspension of gas and electricity had already badly affected the dependent industries of the steel sector to which raw material is being provided by re-rolling industry. He said that these industries export a considerable part of their production therefore non availability of raw material at the end of re-rolling industry may result in diversion of country’s share to other countries.
He said that it is beyond the understanding of the business community that why the government is adopting such anti-industry policies that are not only adversely affecting the country but also denting the government reputation.
The PSRMA Vice Chairman said that power cuts had badly hit the entire industrial sector in the country, especially the industry in Punjab is the biggest victim of the Federal Government’s biased policies despite the fact that the industry in Punjab is providing jobs to the millions of workers with 70 per cent share in total exports and is contributing a huge amount of taxes.
He said that it is very unfortunate that authorities had a number of times admitted that the energy crisis was because of power pilferage but no concrete step had so far been taken.
PSRMA is of the view that all those who are involved in this national crime should be taken to task irrespective of their status.
“It is in the best interests of the country that the power thieves must be taken to task along with responsible in the department who facilitate the culprits in committing theft of billions of rupees every year on regular basis.”
Mian Murad Ashraf said that it is highly unjustified that on the one hand power is not available while on the other its prices are increased repeatedly in a year.
The PSRMA urged the President of Pakistan, Prime Minister, Minister for Petroleum and Natural Resources and Minister for Water and Power to intervene into the issue for early restoration of supply of gas and electricity to the steel industry.
