Parliamentary Cooperation and People-To-People contacts to Strengthen Pak-German relations: National Assembly Speaker

Islamabad: Speaker, National Assembly Dr. Fehmida Mirza has said that Pakistan and Germany enjoy cordial relations based on common interest and shared perceptions on major international issues. She said that Pakistan strongly desires to further diversify its existing relations through people-to-people contacts and parliamentary cooperation between National Assembly and German Bundestag (Parliament). Dr. Fehmida Mirza was talking to a 5-Members Delegation comprising of Members of German Bundestag led by Mr. Rainer Arnold, MP which called on her in Parliament House today.

Dr. Fehmida Mirza said that the present Pakistani political hierarchy envisions a qualitative transformation in its relation with Germany for building a broad based, substantive and long term partnership encompassing all areas of mutual cooperation. She appreciated the German leadership’s keen interest in expanding and deepening bilateral relations with Pakistan. She acknowledged the generous German assistance and support in the FODP Forum and relief/rehabilitation operation during military initiative in tribal areas and devastating floods in the country. She also expressed gratitude on Germany’s constant support for the wider EU market access and securing trade concession for Pakistan.

The Speaker said that Pakistan has been badly affected by the activities of extremists and terrorists. She said that Pakistan was trying to root-out that evil from the country through its indigenous resources; however, support from friendly countries would supplement its efforts. Underlining the need for further enhancing parliamentary ties between parliaments of both the countries, she said that Pak-German parliamentarians could build bridges of friendship and understanding between two states.

She informed the German MPs that Pak-Germany Friendship Group in National Assembly has been activated and future interaction between parliamentarians of both the countries would help them to exchange views and experiences specially the women MPs. She also appreciated assistance to the National Assembly by German Bundestag. She called for future collaboration for capacity building of MPs and secretarial staff through Pakistan Institute of Parliamentary Services (PIPS).

Mr. Rainer Arnold, MP said that Germany also attaches great value to its relations with Pakistan and needs to further cement them. He said that Pakistan is an important country in region and it was a strong desire of his country to see Pakistan as a prosperous and stable country which was also in the interest of the region and the world. He agreed for enhancing relations between parliamentarians of both the countries. He assured the Speaker of Germany’s continued support and cooperation in diverse fields. He also assured Speaker that Germany would extend maximum support to Pakistan to fight the bane of terrorism in the country.
