PM Sharif Advocates for Enhanced Maritime Capabilities to Boost Pakistan’s Trade with Central Asia

Karachi: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has directed significant upgrades and operational changes at major Pakistani ports to improve trade connectivity, particularly facilitating easier access for Central Asian countries.

According to Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, during a high-level meeting with officials from the Karachi Port Trust, Port Qasim Authority, and Pakistan National Shipping Corporation, Sharif issued directives aimed at optimizing transportation and reducing operational bottlenecks. Key actions include keeping the Lyari Expressway open round the clock for cargo movement and connecting the Malir Expressway directly to the seaport to ensure faster delivery of goods.

The Prime Minister emphasized the need to enhance the railways’ capacity for transporting goods to Karachi Port and to lower fees for LNG ships at Port Qasim to match international rates. Additionally, he stressed the urgent installation of advanced scanning machinery at these ports and the implementation of measures to shorten customs clearance times by using modern technology.

Sharif discussed the importance of developing the export sector through improvements at the existing ports and outlined a comprehensive plan for the regulation of shipping lines. He also tasked the Pakistan National Shipping Corporation with devising an effective operational plan to reduce costs, stating that these reforms could help Pakistan earn substantial foreign exchange.

The meeting also focused on fostering a business-friendly environment, with the Prime Minister reiterating his commitment to the private sector and investor facilitation as part of his broader economic stabilization and growth strategy. He highlighted Pakistan’s strategic advantage as the most convenient maritime gateway for Central Asian states eager to leverage this route for trade.

To ensure comparative effectiveness, Sharif requested a detailed performance report on the Karachi Port Trust relative to other regional ports.
