Islamabad, July 04, 2012 (PPI-OT): The Cabinet unanimously endorsed the decision of the Defence Committee of the Cabinet (DCC) for reopening of Ground Lines of Communication to and from Afghanistan. On the occasion, the Prime Minister said that it is the vindication of Pakistan’s principled stand after the unfortunate incident of Salala.

The Prime Minister said that the US will have to respect Pakistan’s sovereignty in order to further our relationship that is enduring, strategic and carefully defined for peace and security in the region. The Prime Minister said that in view of our larger objective of peace and stability in Afghanistan and the whole region and also our cooperative relations with the 50 member states of NATO / ISAF, we would facilitate the transition process to help enable Afghanistan’s national institutions to meet the challenges they are facing.

Secretary Water and Power Division updated the Cabinet on the overall Energy Situation in the country. He informed that for the last 10 days, the average electricity generation in the country is 12500 MW from hydel, thermal and IPPs sources.

There is a shortfall of 5000 MW plus. With the enhanced supply of oil and gas and melting of glaciers, the daily production of electricity will increase to 13500 MW shortly. The Cabinet was informed that the Energy Committee will be meeting regularly to closely monitor the electricity situation in the country.

The Cabinet approved the Draft Bill tabled by Ministry of Overseas Pakistanis proposing amendment in Article 63 (1) © of the Constitution to enable the overseas Pakistanis having dual nationality to contest election for the membership of the parliament.

The Cabinet approved the Contempt of Court Bill, 2012 for introduction in either House of the Parliament. Through proposed bill, the scope of the right to appeal has been enlarged. Moreover, other necessary provisions relevant to contempt proceedings have been incorporated.

The Cabinet meeting reviewed the implementation status of Cabinet decisions pertaining to Commerce Division. So far, Ministry of Commerce took 61 decisions. 44 are implemented and 17 are under implementation. The overall percentage of implementation remained 72%.

The Cabinet considered and accorded its approval for signing of MoU between the Pakistan’s Board of Investment and Jordan Investment Board. The proposed MoU with Jordan Investment Board is a promotional tool to enhance understanding on economic and investment matters between the two friendly countries.
