Punjab Launches Ambitious “Plant for Pakistan” Initiative on Independence Day Under CM Maryam Nawaz Sharif’s Leadership

Lahore: In a significant environmental push aligned with Independence Day celebrations, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has spearheaded the “Plant for Pakistan” initiative. This province-wide effort, set to commence on August 14, marks a novel approach to integrating national pride with ecological stewardship.

According to Punjab Portal announcement issued on 11 August 2024, the “Plant for Pakistan” drive will feature a variety of activities, including a unique plantation marathon across all districts, aimed at promoting widespread participation in tree planting. The initiative also includes cultural celebrations, such as a Mushaira and a musical concert at Minar-e-Pakistan, enhancing the festive atmosphere of the day.

The campaign will kick off with an Azadi float that will travel from Rawalpindi to Lahore, arriving at Minar-e-Pakistan on the evening of August 13. The float will showcase the cultural heritage of Pakistan’s provinces, Azad Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan, symbolizing national unity. In addition to the public festivities, the drive will extend to hospitals, homes for the elderly, and other institutions, with plans to involve local sports teams and community members in tree planting activities.

Chief Minister Sharif has announced plans to recognize the district with the highest number of plantations, further incentivizing participation. Alongside the environmental efforts, traditional Independence Day activities such as flag hoisting ceremonies and sports competitions will also take place across Punjab, complemented by special illuminations of government and private buildings in national colors.
