Karachi: Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah has unveiled a new initiative offering interest-free agricultural loans to small growers in Sindh. The plan, introduced at the launch of the Hari Card, aims to boost agricultural activities by alleviating financial burdens on farmers, who will only need to repay the principal amount of these loans.
According to Chief Minister Sindh, the program is designed to empower small farmers and stimulate growth within the agricultural sector of the region. The loans will be managed through Sindh Bank, with the provincial government absorbing the interest costs. This move is expected to allow farmers to invest more effectively in their operations without the stress of accruing interest.
The announcement was made during a ceremony attended by Pakistan Peoples Party Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari. Alongside the financial measures, the Chief Minister also addressed a recent police incident involving the ‘Sindh Rawadari March,’ apologizing for the actions taken and promising to prevent such occurrences in the future. The government cited heightened security concerns related to a nearby terrorist incident and the ongoing Shanghai Cooperation Organization Summit in Islamabad as reasons for initially asking to postpone the march.
The Hari Card initiative is part of a broader effort by the Sindh government to support agricultural development through various programs. These include initiatives to improve water management, enhance productivity, and mitigate the effects of climate change. Additionally, the government has partnered with an insurance company to provide crop insurance, safeguarding farmers against losses from natural disasters.
This approach not only aims to recover from the severe impacts of the 2022 floods, which caused extensive damage to farmland in Sindh but also to propel the province’s agricultural sector towards sustainable growth and enhanced food security.
