Washington US President Donald Trump and French counterpart Emmanuel Macron discussed plans for the withdrawal of American troops from Syria during a telephone call on Monday.

“The two leaders discussed the situation in Syria, including the commitment of the United States and France to the destruction of ISIS as well as plans for a strong, deliberate, and coordinated withdrawal of US troops from Syria,” the White House said in a statement, referring to the militant group Islamic State by an acronym.

“They reiterated that any further use of chemical weapons in Syria must not be tolerated,” the statement added.

On 19 December last year, President Trump ordered the withdrawal of 2,000 American troops from Syria, bringing a sudden end to a military campaign that largely vanquished ISIS.

We have won against ISIS, Trump declared in a video posted on Twitter, adding, Our boys, our young women, our men they’re all coming back, and they’re coming back now.
