Under Secretary Novelli To Deliver Our Ocean Message to Hokulea

Under Secretary of State for Economic Growth, Energy, and the Environment Catherine A. Novelli will greet the crew of the traditional Polynesian double-hulled canoe Hokule’aduring their visit to Washington, D.C. She will present them with a message from Secretary Kerry about the September 15-16, 2016 Our Ocean conference, which they will deliver, along with other messages gathered during their voyage, to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in New York City on World Oceans Day, June 8.

The Polynesian Voyaging Society M?lama Honua Worldwide Voyage is taking the iconic sailing canoe Hokule’aaround the world to help build a global movement toward a more sustainable ocean and planet. Since departing Hawaiian waters in May 2014, Hokule’a has sailed approximately 24,000 nautical miles and made stops in 65 ports in 14 countries and territories. In recognition of the global nature of the Hokule’avoyage, the Department of State has extended invitations to members of the diplomatic community representing places the Hokule’a has visited along its voyage, including French Polynesia, Samoa, Cook Islands, Tonga, New Zealand, Australia, Indonesia, Mozambique, South Africa, Brazil, U.S. Virgin Islands, British Virgin Islands, and Cuba, as well as countries that the Hokule’a will visit in the remainder of its voyage, including Canada, Panama, Costa Rica, Ecuador, and Chile.

The event, which will include a tour of the canoe, will take place on Tuesday, May 24, 2016 from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the Washington Canoe Club located at 3700 Water Street, NW, Washington, D.C. Parking is extremely limited.
