World Food Day Celebrations in Pakistan

Islamabad, October 30, 2013 (PPI-OT): The UN World Food Programme (WFP) with its sister UN food agencies, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) celebrated World Food Day in Pakistan today.

The theme of this year’s World Food Day is “Sustainable Food Systems for Food Security and Nutrition.”

An event commemorating the day was organized by the Ministry of National Food Security and Research together with FAO and WFP and included a short theatre play on the theme, an exhibition, messages from the President of Pakistan, the Prime Minister and representatives from FAO, WFP and Oxfam.

“Here in Pakistan, WFP works closely with the government as well as FAO, IFAD and other UN agencies to address food and nutrition security. WFP has been working on supporting the Salt Iodization programme and a national strategy for wheat flour fortification to address micronutrient deficiencies while building up local capacity to mill and fortify 150,000 metric tons of wheat donated to WFP by the Government of Pakistan in 2013.

We have developed partnerships with the public and private sectors for local production of specialized nutritious foods which has become a model for other countries and plays an important role in decreasing child undernutrition throughout the region, “ said WFP Pakistan Country Director, Lola Castro.

According to FAO, addressing undernutrition requires integrated action and complementary interventions in agriculture, management of natural resources, public health and education, and in broader policy domains. There is need to ensure access to food all year round and eliminate wastage while enhancing smallholder production.

“IFAD, together with FAO and WFP, resolves to raise awareness about the many factors affecting food and nutrition security in vulnerable households and supports adoption of more pronounced sustainable food systems in its operations in order to ensure sufficient food security” said IFAD Representative, Qaim Shah.

Worldwide, some 842 million people – more than one in eight people – are chronically food insecure. Yet even more – around two billion people – lack the vitamins and minerals needed to live healthy lives. If the global community invested US$1.2 billion per year for five years on reducing micronutrient deficiencies, the benefits in better health, fewer child deaths and increased future earnings would generate gains worth US$15.3 billion.
