World Refugees Day celebrated in Pakistan
Islamabad: Like other countries of the world, “World Refugees Day was celebrated in Pakistan on Monday with this promise that maximum efforts should be taken for the uplifting and rehabilitation of the refugees and measure should be taken for their repatriation with honour and integrity. In this connection in Pakistan, a colourful Program was organized by UNHCR and CCAR in the National Library Auditorium, Islamabad.
On this occasion Federal Minister for SAFRON and SPORTS Engr. Shaukat Ullah was a Chief Guest, he said that the purpose of World Refugees Day is to draw attention to the plight of refugees, celebrate their courage and resilience and renew commitment to solving their problems. He lauded the proactive and positive role of UNHCR, interaction and support to Pakistan to take huge responsibilities for the displaced population particularly for Afghan Refugees, which is the largest refugee population in the World for the longest period.
Millions of Afghan Refuges still reside in Pakistan, we are adhering to the principal of voluntarism and intend to continue for pursing voluntary repatriation as the preferred solution he maintained. New Strategy for Management and Repatriation for Afghan Refugees is a comprehensive document and is accordance with the international convention, he stated that the population profiling is also in operation which will generate credible updated data and analysis with regard to the protection needs and socio economic profile of the Afghan Population for their proper management during their stay in Pakistan. More coordinated and concerted efforts are required with UNHCR pooling of all resources to achieve the common objectives, the Minister said.
Earlier the UN Country Representative of UNHCR Mr. Mangesha Kebede has extended thanks to the Government of Pakistan for the cooperation and uplifting of the refugees residing in Pakistan. The UN Secretary General Ben ki Moon message on the 60th Anniversary of UNHCR w as read by UN Resident Coordinator Mr. Timmu Pakkala. A video message of UN goodwill Ambassador Ms. Angelina Jolie was also presented with slogan of the year 2011 “One Refugee is too many”.
Cultural activities were performed by the various Refugees Communities in i.e. Afghani, Somalians, Iranian and Iraqies which was enjoyed and appreciated by the participant. At the end the Chief Guest distributed awards among the refugees students for their outstanding performance in their academics and sports activities.
