Promotion of knowledge-based economy vital for economic progress: Punjab Governor

Punjab Governor Muhammad Balighur Rehman has said that economic progress cannot be achieved without promoting knowledge-based economy.

 

He was addressing 18th convocation of Islamia University, Bahawalpur on Saturday.

 

He said that government of PML (N) is determined for the wellbeing of youth despite financial constraints.

 

He asked the students to devote their energies and skills to the country and the nation.

 

While lauding the performance of Islamia University, he congratulated the faculty members, students and staff of the university that globally, IUB has improved from 1000-1200 to 801-1000 position.

 

Earlier, Vice Chancellor Islamia University, Bahawalpur Engineer Prof Dr Athar Mehboob in his welcome address said that twenty thousand students of the university are getting scholarships worth more than one billion rupees during the current financial year.

 

According to Radio Pakistan’s Correspondent Sajjad Parvez, Punjab Governor Muhammad Balighur Rehman also distributed degrees among eight PhD and 71 MPhil scholars while awarded sixty seven gold medals, fifty four silver medals to the students of BS, BSc, MA, MCs, disciplines.

ANP demands ECP to conduct by-elections in KP timely

Provincial President Awami National Party Aimal Wali Khan has demanded Election Commission of Pakistan to timely conduct by-elections in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa so that people can complete their representation in the Parliament.

In a statement, he said PTI chief is roaming free despite hurling threats on judges and institutions.

He said that there should the writ of law in the country which should be applied to all.

FM to undertake two-day official visit to Germany from today

Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari will undertake a two-day official visit to Germany from Thursday on the invitation of his German counterpart.

Besides helping to consolidate and expand bilateral relations with Germany, the visit will provide a valuable opportunity to strengthen Pakistan’s engagement with an important member of the European Union and share our perspective on climate induced floods in Pakistan and regional and global issues.

In addition to meeting Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock, the Foreign Minister would hold meetings with other dignitaries and interact with the media.

Focus of the visit would be on further deepening Pakistan’s economic engagement with Germany, a key export destination for Pakistan, and identifying new opportunities for mutually beneficial cooperation.

Pakistan has longstanding, multidimensional ties with Germany, home to a sizable Pakistani community, an attractive destination for our students to pursue higher education and a major investment partner.

The Foreign Minister’s visit will provide further impetus to our relations with Germany.

Reko Diq: President approves filing of reference to Supreme Court

President Dr Arif Alvi has approved filing of reference to the Supreme Court in Reko Diq Project.

Earlier the Apex Committee, headed by Minister for Finance and Tethyan Copper Company Pakistan (Private) Limited had agreed to a framework for settlement and revival of the Reko Diq Project in March this year.

It is pertinent to mention that the Federal Cabinet last month approved the filing of Reference to the Supreme Court of Pakistan under Article 186 of the Constitution.

Pakistan Loses ITU Election to Zimbabwe

The member states of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) have elected Dr. Cosmas Zavazava of Zimbabwe as the next Director of the Telecommunication Development Bureau ITU.

165 member states of ITU were present and voting. Zavazava defeated Pakistan’s nominee Anusha Rahman Khan. The required majority for winning the elections of Director Telecommunication Development Bureau ITU was 85.

The Zimbabwean candidate received the highest number of votes, i.e. 101, followed by Stephen Bereaux of the Bahamas who received 59 votes. Anusha Rahman Khan had the support of only 15 states.

The ITU elections are held in three stages, with the candidature of two candidates receiving the lowest number of votes in each stage withdrawn after each round of voting.
