Babar and Rizwan Pile On More Batting Records Together

Pakistan’s all-format captain, Babar Azam, and wicket-keeper batter, Mohammad Rizwan, have already broken multiple partnership records over the past year and they continued their record-breaking form in Pakistan’s match against Namibia in the ongoing 2021 T20 World Cup.

Babar and Rizwan have already scored two century stands in this edition of the T20 World Cup. They scored 152 runs in Pakistan’s first match against arch-rivals India and followed it up with another century stand against Namibia. Babar and Rizwan both scored exquisite half-centuries as Pakistan won their fourth consecutive match in the tournament and became the first team to officially qualify for the semi-finals of the tournament.

The duo put on an opening stand of 113 runs in the match against Namibia. This was their fifth century partnership in T20I cricket, which is a world record. They surpassed the record of Indian pair, Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan and New Zealand pair, Kane Williamson and Martin Guptill, who have put on a century partnership on four occasions.

The Pakistani pair also became the first batting partners to score more than 1,000 partnership runs in a calendar year. Previously, Ireland’s Paul Stirling and Kevin O’Brien held the record for most runs as a pair in a calendar year as they scored 756 runs in 20 innings in 2019.

Babar and Rizwan have already scored 1,041 runs in 17 innings in the calendar year. Overall, the duo has put together 1,134 runs while batting together.

Rizwan Beats Babar and Kohli’s Batting Record

Pakistan’s wicket-keeper batter, Mohammad Rizwan, has been in sublime form over the past year and his transformation in the shortest form of the game has been nothing short of incredible. Rizwan has piled on the runs in T20Is and has broken multiple batting records this year.

The 29-year old scored yet another exceptional half-century against Namibia in the ongoing 2021 T20 World Cup and helped Pakistan qualify for the semi-finals of the tournament for the first time since 2012.

The gritty batter broke yet another batting record during his innings against Namibia. He became the first-ever player to score more than 900 runs in T20Is in a calendar year. No other player has scored more than 748 runs in a calendar year. Rizwan can manage to cross the 1,000 run barrier if he continues his terrific form.

Rizwan has also scored 1,651 runs in T20s in the calendar year and has become the second-highest run-scorer in the format in one year. Rizwan surpassed fellow opening batter, Babar Azam, and Indian captain, Virat Kohli, who had scored 1,607 and 1,614 runs in a calendar year respectively.

The opening batter is just four runs away from breaking the record for most runs in a year in the T20s. The record is currently held by West Indian legend, Chris Gayle, who amassed 1,665 runs in 2015. With Pakistan scheduled to play at least two more matches in the T20 World Cup, Rizwan has a high chance of breaking the record.

Rizwan also surpassed Virat Kohli for the highest batting average in T20Is (minimum 1,000 runs). Rizwan’s unbeaten knock of 79 against Namibia took his career average to 52.66 while Kohli’s career average in T20Is is 52.01.

Babar Azam Set to Become No.1 T20I Batsman Yet Again

Pakistan captain, Babar Azam, is likely to rise to the top of the T20I batting rankings following a brilliant 70 runs off 49 balls against Namibia on Tuesday.

Babar’s 70-run innings was the main catalyst in the 113-run opening partnership between the skipper and Mohammad Rizwan and helped Pakistan post a mammoth total of 189 runs on the board. This was the second-highest total of the tournament after Afghanistan’s 190 against Scotland.

Currently, England’s David Malan and Babar Azam maintain their first and second spot, respectively. However, this gutsy innings is likely to bridge the 11-point gap between Babar and the current No. 1 T20I batsman, Malan, in the T20I batting rankings.

They are joined in the top five by South Africa’s Aiden Markram (743), Pakistan’s M. Rizwan (727), and India’s Virat Kohli (725) at 3, 4, and 5.

Following the ranking update, expected later in the day or tomorrow, would be the second time for Babar to reach the top T20 batter after 2018 when he reclaimed the top position thrice in the same year on the back of his sublime batting form.

Babar Azam Breaks Multiple Records of Virat Kohli With Another 50

Pakistan’s all-format captain, Babar Azam, is on a record-breaking spree ever since his introduction to international cricket in 2015. The flamboyant batter has broken a majority of Pakistan’s batting records and is well on his way to breaking international batting records as well.

Babar has been in terrific form over the past few years and his skills keep on improving game after game. Ever since Babar has been appointed as the captain of the national side, Pakistan’s overall team performances have been sublime and the team looks well settled to become one of the top sides in international cricket.

Under the leadership of Babar Azam, Pakistan defeated India for the first time in a World Cup match and continued their exceptional form by becoming the first team to qualify for the semi-finals of the 2021 T20 World Cup.

Babar’s own form has also improved since he took charge of the captaincy. He has been scoring heavily in all formats and his magnificent form in T20s has been one of the highlights of his short stint as captain so far.

The flamboyant batter created history once again as he scored yet another half-century in Pakistan’s match against Namibia on Tuesday. This was Babar’s 14th 50+ score in T20Is since becoming the captain of the national side. No other captain has scored more 50+ scores than Babar Azam. Previously, the record was held by Indian captain, Virat Kohli who had scored 50+ scores on 13 occasions.

Babar has also scored the most runs in the first 60 T20Is of his career. Again, the record was previously held by Kohli who had scored 2,167 runs in his first 60 T20I innings. Babar has scored 2,402 runs in the same number of innings.

Babar Azam Reclaims Top Spot in ICC T20I Rankings

Pakistan’s all-format captain, Babar Azam, has reclaimed his number one spot in the ICC T20I batter rankings after a sublime start to the 2021 T20 World Cup campaign. Babar has scored three half-centuries in the first four matches of the T20 World Cup and is currently the third-highest run-scorer in the tournament with 198 runs.

Babar overtook England’s Dawid Malan who had replaced Babar as the number one batter late last year. While Babar has scored heavily in the previous few weeks, Malan has been in torrid form over the past few months. He hasn’t registered a big score in England’s first four matches in the 2021 T20 World Cup as well.

Pakistan’s captain has been in marvelous form over the past few years. He is already ranked as the number one ODI batter in the world while he has also improved his Test numbers over the past few series. He is ranked as the number 7th batter in the longest format of the game.

Babar’s opening partner, Mohammad Rizwan, is currently ranked as the number four batter and is only two points away from the number three ranked Aaron Finch. If Rizwan continues his magnificent form in the upcoming matches, he will likely replace Finch as the number three batter in the world.

Simon Doull Raises Question Marks on Mohammad Rizwan’s Batting Approach

Pakistan wicket-keeper batter, Mohammad Rizwan, played yet another exceptional knock as he helped Pakistan to a 45-run victory over Namibia in the 2021 T20 World Cup. While Rizwan earned much-earned plaudits from around the world for his gritty innings, some people in the cricketing fraternity were not impressed with his batting display.

Former New Zealand fast bowler and current cricket commentator, Simon Doull, claimed that Rizwan’s approach in the first phase of the innings was strange and it could have cost Pakistan the match. Doull said that Rizwan did manage to recover and score big in the latter phase of the innings but this strategy could have backfired against a top international side.

“In a situation like this, you could say that it ended up really well. Would it be the same against a top-quality side? That’s the question you got to ask. Can he afford to do that against a top-quality bowling lineup? That time will tell,” Doull remarked.

Former pacer said that Rizwan’s approach was conservative from the start and had he failed to kick on, it would have cost Pakistan in a huge way. He added that Rizwan did manage to convert his timid start into good innings against Namibia but this strategy will not work every time.

Rizwan has scored two half-centuries in the tournament so far and is the second-highest run-scorer in the competition. His magnificent innings against India and Namibia helped Pakistan become the first team to qualify for the semi-finals of the 2021 T20 World Cup.
