Shaheen Afridi is Now the Leading Test Wicket-Taker Among Asians Since His Debut

Pakistan’s fast-bowling spearhead, Shaheen Afridi, continued his rich vein of form as he picked up yet another Test five-wicket haul in the first Test match against Bangladesh. Shaheen finished with figures of 7/102 in the first Test and handed Pakistan a golden chance to win the first Test of the two-match series.

PCB Likely to Appoint Mohammad Yousuf & Umar Gul as New Coaches

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is likely to appoint former cricketers, Mohammad Yousuf and Umar Gul as the national team’s interim batting and bowling consultants respectively. The two former players are expected to be announced as the consultants for Pakistan’s upcoming series against West Indies.

PCB has not yet decided to appoint permanent coaching staff for the national team ever since the departure of former head coach, Misbah-ul-Haq, and bowling coach, Waqar Younis, in September 2021. Legendary Australian batter, Matthew Hayden, and former South African bowler, Vernon Philander, were roped in as interim coaches for Pakistan’s 2021 T20 World Cup campaign. They have now left their roles with the PCB as their contracts ended.

Mohammad Yousuf and Umar Gul are the likely candidates for the consultancy job and will join Pakistan’s interim head coach, Saqlain Mushtaq, for the upcoming series. Saqlain was also initially appointed as Pakistan’s head coach for the T20 World Cup but the PCB decided to extend his contract for the Bangladesh tour. He is likely to continue his role in the upcoming West Indies tour of Pakistan as well.

Yousuf has had coaching experience at PCB’s National High-Performance Center, while Gul has worked as a bowling coach for Pakistan Super League (PSL) franchise, Quetta Gladiators, as well as in other franchise T20 leagues.

Abid Ali & Abdullah Shafique Create History With Consecutive Century Stands

Pakistan’s Test opening has been a point of concern for the national team as multiple combinations have failed to put in the performances required at the international level. While the previous opening partnerships have failed to deliver consistently, Pakistan’s new pair of Abid Ali and Abdullah Shafique has performed exceptionally in their first match together.

Both the openers have provided a solid start to Pakistan at the top of the order as they scored two century partnerships in as many innings against Bangladesh.

The openers put on a stand of 146 in the first innings as Abdullah scored a half-century in his debut innings while Abid went on to score a century. The two players are currently unbeaten with a team total of 109 in the second innings as both have gone past their half-centuries.

This is only the second time in Pakistan’s history that the openers have put on a century stand in each of the two innings of the Test. The first instance occurred back in 2003 when Imran Farhat and Taufeeq Umar scored a century stand in both innings against South Africa in Lahore.

The two openers will resume the innings on the fifth and final day of the Test match with Pakistan requiring another 93 runs with 10 wickets in hand to win the first Test of the two-match series. Abid is currently batting on 56 while Abdullah is batting on 53 in only his second innings in Test cricket.

Befiler Wants to Digitize Tax Filing in Pakistan With its Latest Grant

Befiler will enhance its efforts to promote tax compliance in Pakistan through the grant it won in the recent round of Karandaaz’s Digital Experiment Program.

Befiler participated in the recent round of Karandaaz’s Digital Experiment Program, and won the grant through a competitive application process. The grant will support Befiler’s vision of promoting tax compliance in Pakistan through the digitalization of the tax filing process; specifically encouraging women’s participation in financial and tax matters.

Karandaaz Pakistan is a not-for-profit funded by the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF).

The grant will be specifically utilized for promoting tax filing among working women so that they could digitally file their tax returns and handle other business thereby. This will decrease women’s reliance on male family members for in-person meetings with consultants for legal and tax matters.

For Pakistan, embracing digital financial services remains a challenge. The gap is especially wide as only 7% of women in Pakistan are financially included compared to 20% of men. However, Befiler’s user stats reveal that although female users are only 5% of total users, their conversion rate from sign up on Befiler to successful tax filing is more than double compared to their male counterparts. This demonstrates that women are more serious about financial and tax matters in comparison to males.

Through this grant, Befiler plans to test out interventions specially designed to encourage more women to become active tax filers through Befiler’s user-friendly mobile app and outcomes of communication using A/B testing. The lessons learned through the experiment will be widely disseminated for diffusion and uptake to push the entire ecosystem forward.

Akbar Tejani, CEO Befiler Pakistan said, “Befiler aims to directly target women for tax filing in hopes to have a higher involvement from them in finance and tax matters. Through this exercise, we hope to give rise to opportunities to women to experience focused and directed marketing encouraging them to engage in tax filing process.”

“This will help in moving past the stereotype that the financial and tax matters are to be led by men in their families. Our alliance with Karandaaz Pakistan is directed towards the execution of strategies to support women empowerment through focused targeting, and facilitation,” he added.

Waqas ul Hasan, CEO Karandaaz Pakistan said, “Karandaaz is pleased to join hands with Befiler, the pioneer of the digital tax filing platform in Pakistan focusing on introducing women to the use of technology for the tax filing process. Through the Digital Experiments Program, Karandaaz is supporting businesses to research on and understand the gaps in the market with respect to uptake and usage of digital financial services. The objective of the program is to support digital financial service providers test out different hypotheses on a real consumer base and compare results of different versions to identify the sweet spot for successful interventions.”

“We hope that the experiment by Befiler will help in determining possibilities for increasing tax filing among women leading to further self-sufficiency and empowerment. We are grateful to our sponsors UK’s FCDO and BMGF whose funding is helping us support such initiatives that make digitalization a common norm, providing footmarks for future ideas,” he added.

The economy of Pakistan is undergoing a change in terms of increased women-owned businesses and the need for women-specific tax training products is becoming imperative. The digital experiment of Befiler will start by creating user samples and as part of the first phase of the experiment, Befiler will roll out a new app interface to specifically engage women through in-app content and communication.

In the second phase efficiency of incentive versus fear-based communication will be tested. Through this experiment, Befiler looks forward to setting a new way ahead for women to be addressed as a target group for tax and financial products.

Decision to Close CNG Stations in Sindh Rejected

All Pakistan CNG Association (APCNGA) on Monday rejected the decision of the SSGC to close CNG stations for two and a half months, from December 1, 2021, to February 15, 2022.

Closing of CNG stations in Sindh province is unjustified cruelty, which will not be accepted, said Group Leader of APCNGA, Ghiyas Abdullah Paracha.

In a statement issued today, he said that the SSGC did not consult with the stakeholders before deciding to close the CNG station from December 1 to February 15.

He said that the association of CNG owners would not accept the unilateral decision, which defies merit.

Ghiyas Paracha said that it was very unfair to shut down the CNG sector in Sindh, which is paying the highest price for LNG, i.e., fifteen dollars per unit.

On the other hand, he said, the sectors, which are paying $2 to $6 per unit for LNG are being promoted.

The CNG sector is ensuring a reduction in the oil import bill and reduces urban pollution as compared to other fuels.

This environment-friendly fuel facilitates transportation to the poor, but it is subjected to frequent tariffs and tax hikes.

He said that gas utilities cut off the gas supply to the CNG sector whenever they want, which affects the employment and business of millions of people, which is unfair.

He said that the concerned authorities often say that the CNG sector is the last priority in the gas-consuming sectors, which is a misrepresentation, and if it is so, then they should show the proof from the government in this regard.
