Star Pakistani javelin thrower, Arshad Nadeem solidified his position as a dominant force in the world of athletics with a stunning performance in Hungary.

With an impressive throw of 86.79m, Nadeem secured a place in the finals of the ongoing World Athletics Championship and earned a spot in the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Starting on a slightly shaky note with a throw of 70.63 meters, Arshad Nadeem quickly recalibrated, delivering an impressive 81.53m in his second attempt.

He easily surpassed the automatic qualifying mark of 83 meters, placing him comfortably among the top 12 contenders.

It is relevant to mention that the highly anticipated finals of the javelin throw in the marquee event will take place on Sunday, August 27, in Hungary.

Last week, Arshad Nadeem expressed his determination to win a gold medal for his country in the mega event.

“I am feeling well and, InshaAllah, will strive for the desired outcome. If I manage to achieve my personal best throw, a gold medal is within reach, InshaAllah,” he stated.

Nadeem, who clinched a gold medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games (CWG) in Birmingham, returns to action after a year-long hiatus due to an extended injury.

GC University Lahore Opens Doors to Female Athletes for Historic Admissions

In a landmark move for female sports enthusiasts, the GC University in Lahore has initiated undergraduate admissions for the 2023-24 academic year on the basis of sports.

This marks only the second time the university has offered admissions in this manner, showcasing its growing commitment to inclusivity and diversity in sports.

GCU Lahore, recognized for its rich heritage and academic excellence, is giving talented female students a chance to shine by offering admissions in 15 distinct sports.

The response in the initial days of the sports trials was nothing short of overwhelming, with numerous aspirants from all over the country participating with fervor.

One of the notable highlights of the trials for undergraduate admissions has been the stellar performance exhibited by participants in hockey and football.

These female athletes, through their grit and skill, have effectively captured the attention of the selection committees, setting a precedent for others to follow.

These trials mark a significant milestone for the university as they also launch the women’s football and hockey teams in GC University

Good News for Young Girls: PCB Announces Trials Throughout Pakistan

The Pakistan Cricket Board, as part of its continuous effort to unearth women cricketers at the grassroots level, will hold a nationwide women’s cricket trials, across eight cricket academies from 23 to 31 August.

These trials will provide an exceptional platform for talented female cricketers from various age categories to showcase their skills and progress to the higher levels of the game.

The trials will be conducted by the National Selection Committee, which comprises of chairperson and former Test cricketer Saleem Jaffar, former international cricketers Asmavia Iqbal and Marina Iqbal.

The trials will be conducted for three age groups: U19, in which players who are born on or after 1 September 2004 are eligible; emerging and seniors categories.

The trials will help the selectors identify talent and select squads for Pakistan emerging and Pakistan U19 teams. Pakistan emerging side will compete against West Indies emerging team at home in October this year, while Pakistan U19 will feature in a triangular event involving Bangladesh and Sri Lanka in Bangladesh in January 2024.

Head of Women’s Cricket Tania Mallick said, “We have recently awarded first-ever domestic contracts to 74 women cricketers, setting the tone for a brighter future in women’s cricket. With the nationwide trials, we are eagerly poised to bring in a new wave of talented individuals forward.

“We have a great and exciting amount of women’s cricket events ahead, and these trials will help us identify splendid talent that the selectors can consider for the national teams’ squads.”

PCB Invites Bids for Live Streaming and TV Broadcasting Rights

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has invited bids from interested parties to secure live-streaming media and TV broadcasting rights for the upcoming season.

The PCB has provided a set of bidding documents, accessible without charge, from the designated point of contact during regular office hours, Monday to Friday.

The deadline for document acquisition is August 24, aligning with the commitment of PCB to a fair and transparent bidding procedure.

The cricket board mandates that complete sealed technical and financial proposals be submitted in accordance with the guidelines outlined in the bid documents.

These proposals are to be dispatched to the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore, ensuring they reach the designated venue no later than 10:30 am on August 25.

The technical unveiling is scheduled for 11 am on the same day, with the provision that unsubstantiated or incorrect information within the proposals will lead to disqualification.

To streamline the evaluation phase, only those bidders who successfully clear the technical evaluation will have their financial proposals opened for further assessment.

The cricket board has also implemented a protocol wherein sealed financial proposals from technically unchallenged bidders will remain unopened.

Last week, it was reported that the cricket board is expected to earn around Rs. 10 billion from the media rights sale for the upcoming PSL and international season.

It was reported that while two channels compete, one is blacklisted due to past non-payment issues, and a third channel seeks to enter the bidding via a foreign partnership.

In conversation with the media, Arshad Nadeem conveyed his full fitness and determination to clinch the gold medal for his country during the mega event.

“I am feeling well and, InshaAllah will strive for the desired outcome. If I manage to achieve my personal best throw, a gold medal is within reach, InshaAllah,” he stated.

Nadeem, who claimed a gold medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games (CWG) in Birmingham, returns to action after a year-long hiatus due to an extended injury.

Responding to a question about his comeback, he highlighted his previous achievement when he participated in the World Championship in the US after a year-long break.

Arshad and his coach, Salman Butt will depart for Hungary on August 20 to participate in the event, with the javelin throw qualifiers on August 25 and the final on August 27.

It is pertinent to mention here that it will be the third time for the renowned Pakistani athlete to feature in the World Athletics Championship.

The upcoming 19 edition of the World Athletics Championships will be held at the National Athletics Centre in Budapest, Hungary, from 19 to 27 August.

Jinnah Stadium Gears Up for FIFA World Cup 2026 Qualifier

The Pakistan Football Federation (PFF) is preparing Jinnah Stadium in Islamabad to host the crucial FIFA World Cup 2026 Qualifier against Cambodia.

After the Pakistan Sports Board granted clearance, the PFF delegation conducted an extensive inspection of the renowned venue within the Pakistan Sports Complex in Islamabad.

The PFF delegation included Shahid Khokhar, a prominent member of the PFF Normalisation Committee, and Shahzad Anwar, head coach of the national team.

Khokhar expressed satisfaction with the facilities in the stadium, lauding the efforts of the Pakistan Sports Board (PSB) to ensure successful hosting.

Khokhar stressed adherence to FIFA standards, highlighting the necessity of a ready pitch and scoreboard, and plans to request AFC and FIFA to evaluate the venue.

Last week, the PFF Normalization Committee held a meeting with Dr. Asif Tufail, the Director-General of the Sports Board Punjab, to finalize a venue for the qualifier.

The home match between Pakistan and Cambodia is scheduled for 17th October, making this a crucial step in the journey of Pakistan through the World Cup qualifiers.

It is pertinent to mention here that Pakistan will face Cambodia also in Cambodia on 12th October in the qualifying round for the FIFA World Cup 2026.

Ravi Shastri Wants India to Use Kohli Differently in Asia Cup

Former India coach, Ravi Shastri, has proposed a solution to the ongoing batting struggles at the number four spot for India ahead of the upcoming mega tournaments.

Speaking in an interview, Ravi Shastri stated that deploying Virat Kohli in that pivotal role could potentially resolve a long-standing issue for the Indian team.

The former cricketer added that Virat Kohli has performed well when batting at number four, and this move could provide much-needed support to the national side.

“You know, because if we lose two or three at the top, we are gone and it was proved. If you look at Virat Kohli’s record, he is good enough at number four,” he said.

India has experimented with several batters in recent times to address the crucial middle-order spot, yet they have not found a suitable candidate for the position.

Earlier this month, Rohit Sharma noted that finding a reliable candidate for the number four has been a challenge for the Indian team over the last four or five years.

It is pertinent to mention here that Virat Kohli has batted at number four in 42 ODIs, amassing 1,767 runs at an average of 55.21, including seven centuries.

The Rohit Sharma-led side will commence their Asia Cup 2023 campaign against Pakistan on 2 September at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium.
