Zoom Named a Leader in 2021 Gartner® Magic Quadrant™ for Unified Communications as a Service

U.S. Institute of Peace Announces Josephine Ekiru as the 2021 Women Building Peace Award Recipient

WASHINGTON, Oct. 20, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — The U.S. Institute of Peace (USIP) is proud to announce Ms. Josephine Ekiru of Kenya as the recipient of the Institute’s 2021 Women Building Peace Award.

This prestigious annual award honors women who are building peace in countries impacted by conflict.  A council of distinguished experts selected nine finalists among 125 nominations from more than 30 countries.

“If you look around the world, most peace-builders are women,” said USIP President Lise Grande. “It’s our responsibility to do more to support and celebrate these women.”

Ms. Ekiru is the Peace Coordinator for the Northern Rangelands Trust in Kenya, a unique peace group that brings together more than 320,000 indigenous people in Northern and Eastern Kenya as they work together to stop conflict, conserve land, protect wildlife and halt poaching.

The award was presented by U.S. Navy Admiral (Ret.) Michelle Howard as part of a virtual ceremony that featured the other finalists and paid special tribute to the women of Afghanistan.

Anti-polio campaign begins in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa from Thursday

A five-day anti-polio campaign begins in thirteen districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa from tomorrow (Thursday).

According to Emergency Operation Center Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the districts include Peshawar, Charsadda, Nowshera, Mardan, Swabi, Mohmand, Khyber, Bannu, Dera Ismail Khan, Lakki Marwat, Tank, North Waziristan and South Waziristan.

More than three point one million children up to five years of age will be administered anti-polio drops.

About fifteen thousand teams have been constituted which will visit door to door to ensure administration of anti-polio drops to the children. Polio teams will also be deployed at railway stations, bus stands and other public places.

Islamic University Students Protest Against Fee Hike

The students of the International Islamic University, Islamabad, protested on Wednesday against the recent fee hike.

According to the details, the protesting students said that there has been a 50 percent increase in fee announced for first-semester students.

Consequently, students protested with placards in their hands and chanted slogans against university administration at the varsity’s main gate.

“The money charged for transportation has been jacked up as well and scholarships have been canceled,” one of the protesting students said.

“The education department should immediately take notice of the fee hike and release our scholarships,” another student said, adding that if the demands are not met the protests shall continue.

“The university management has two days to come up with a solution for us or else we will shut down the varsity,” the protesters warned.

Dutch Movie Maker to Make a Documentary on Famous Mountaineer’s K2 Journey

Acclaimed Dutch documentary maker, Sjors Ruijter, has decided to make a movie on renowned mountaineer Wilco van Rooijen’s journey to the world’s second-highest mountain and one of the most difficult mountains, K2.

Famous Dutch mountaineer and adventurer, Wilco van Rooijen, revealed this while meeting with Pakistan envoy in the Netherlands, Ambassador Suljuk Mustansar Tarar.

As per the details, Wilco presented Ambassador Tarar his book about his K2 climb whereas the Ambassador also shared Urdu travelogue ‘K2 Kahani’ covering the track to the base camp of K2.

The Ambassador informed him about increased tourism in Pakistan and efforts being made by the government to increase tourism including adventure tourism.

The Pakistan Embassy is working to increase the interest of Dutch tourists to visit Pakistan as the country’s diverse landscape and mountains offer unique challenges to adventurers and mountaineers from across the world.

It is pertinent to note that Wilco had successfully scaled K2 in 2008. During his descent, Wilco got lost and survived after being reported missing for three days. He had earlier attempted to climb world’s second-highest mountain in 1995 and 2006.

Chief Justice Reprimands Sindh Govt Over Non-Appointment of PUMHS VC

Chief Justice Gulzar Ahmed said on Wednesday that the Sindh government does not even have the capacity to appoint a Vice-Chancellor of a university.

He made these remarks while hearing a petition pertaining to the implementation of the decision regarding the appointment of the VC of People’s Medical University Nawabshah in the Supreme Court Karachi Registry.

The apex court had directed the appointment of the VC in October last year. However, petitioner Dr. Shamsuddin’s counsel apprised the court that the candidates are being interviewed today.

“It is unfortunate for Sindh province that the incumbent government cannot even appoint a vice-chancellor. The real problem is that they want to appoint a person of their own interest.”

He said that the committee formed to appoint the VC cannot make new rules after the Supreme Court order.

The court reprimanded the Sindh Attorney General for the delay and ordered the appointment of the university’s vice-chancellor within two months.

CJP Gulzar said that strict action would be taken if the court order was not implemented within the stipulated time.

Dr. Shamsuddin had filed a petition with the Supreme Court for his inclusion in the appointment process. On his petition, the court in October last year had ordered the appointment of the Vice-Chancellor of the varsity and directed to complete the proceedings under the earlier advertisement for the post.

No-confidence motion against CM presented in Balochistan Assembly

A no-confidence motion against the Chief Minister Balochistan Jam Kamal Khan was presented in provincial Assembly session Quetta today.

Session of Balochistan Provincial Assembly held under the chairmanship of Speaker Abdul Quddus Bizenjo.

During the session, an Assembly member Sardar Abdul Rehman Khetran presented a no-confidence motion against the Chief Minister.

The motion demanded that Jam Kamal should step down from the slot of Chief Minister as he lost confidence in the House due to his poor governance.

The poll on the motion will be carried out after completion of debate.

Umar Akmal Reveals Whether He is Permanently Moving to the US

Pakistan’s middle-order batter, Umar Akmal, has squashed away the rumors of him moving to the US to resume his international career by claiming that he is determined to make his comeback to Pakistan’s international team.

Earlier, Akmal had hinted that he is working on a deal in the USA and requested his supporters to support him on his journey but he had not specified the details of the deal. Since then Akmal has played league cricket in the US where he got off to an embarrassing start as he got out for a golden duck on his debut.

The flamboyant middle-order batter took to Twitter and requested his supporters and his family to keep him in their prayers so that he can make his comeback to Pakistan’s national team. Akmal, who has hit second-most sixes by a Pakistani batter in T20I cricket, responded to a tweet by one of his fans who had uploaded a video of all of Akmal’s sixes for Pakistan in T20I cricket.

Akmal responded, “InshaAllah (God Willing) I will come back strong, I am working hard and need all my family and fans prayers.”

The 31-year old recently reintegrated back into cricketing activities after serving his six-month ban from the game due to breaching PCB’s anti-corruption protocols. Akmal was initially banned for three years but his sentence was reduced after an appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS). Akmal was allowed to come back to domestic cricket after he paid the fine of Rs. 4.2 million and undergoing a rehabilitation program.
