Challenges Facing the Saudi Labor Market Due to COVID-19 Reviewed in a Forum Held in Riyadh

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia, Dec. 8, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — The Social Dialogue Forum’s eleventh version, titled “Labor Market in the Light of Corona Pandemic – Effects and Solutions”, was launched today in Saudi capital of Riyadh, and was attended by His Excellency the Minister of Human Resources and Social Development in Saudi Arabia, Eng. His Excellency, Minister Ahmed Al-Rajhi praised the great support provided by Saudi government, which helped to attain notable balance in the labor market, protect labors’ jobs and support the organizations affected by pandemic repercussions, including the private and non-profit organizations. The Minister touched on the initiatives and solutions launched by the ministry to support business growth and protect citizens’ jobs during the pandemic.

Dr. Abdullah Abuthnain, Deputy Minister of Human Resources and Social Development in Saudi Arabia stated: “Reflecting its responsibility and concern about human health, the Kingdom took an initiative focused on the health care of citizens, Residence; irrespective of their legal status by increasing the health services budget to SR47 billion. Aimed at mitigating the pandemic impact on Kingdom economics, the government attained various initiatives and economic stimulus measures, including support, exemption and speeding up the payment of private sector dues, offering 60% of salaries to private sector’s affected citizens, allowing business owners to postpone paying the due value-added taxes for 3 months, as well as providing support packages to SMEs. Ministry of Finance estimated the total economic support packages provided to confront the pandemic as SR177 billion.

Through Social Dialogue, the ministry seeks to form a mutual vision and strengthen an internationally recognized mechanism to realize practical and applicable decisions on labor market issues that may serve the social dialogue and tripartism (government, employers, and workers), and enhance the continuity of effective cooperation between the 3 production parties.

Conagen’s Fermentation Technology To Support DARPA’s ReSource Sustainability Program

Bedford, Mass., Dec. 08, 2021 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Massachusetts-based biotech Conagen announced its participation in a collaboration supporting the ReSource program funded by a U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) grant. The project aims to leverage Conagen’s proprietary fermentation technology to convert plastics and other energy-dense waste into valuable, reusable materials.

“Humanity needs to make better use of plastic resources and close the recycling loop,” said Casey Lippmeier, Ph.D., vice president of innovation at Conagen. This cooperative agreement project will demonstrate the value of recycled material for building a sustainable infrastructure.”

Under the DOD, the U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) Biological Technologies Office created the ReSource Program to research and develop an integrated self-containment system. The project explores using a combination of synthetic biology and chemical technology for turning plastic waste into critical supplies.

Professor Chris A. Voigt, Ph.D., directs the project at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in collaboration with Conagen and Novoloop. The Voigt lab has expertise in microbial genetic design and engineering and has created tools and platform technologies central to the effort.

Conagen was selected as the fermentation scale-up partner for its synthetic biology expertise, purification process development capability, and world-scale manufacturing.

“While conventional fermentation has been used for centuries to make foods and beverages, precision fermentation has become the core resource for commercializing natural and sustainable synthetic biology products,” said Lippmeier.

Novoloop uses chemical technologies to decompose plastic waste into chemical building blocks, enabling the downstream fermentation to make bio-products.

“Recycling plastic waste is just the beginning,” says Lippmeier. “This DARPA-funded project primarily seeks to improve the efficient use of resources by our troops.  However, the technology for converting plastics and bio-plastics into other higher-value materials should create incentives to remove these pollutants from the environment and support humanitarian efforts with renewable sources of food, nutrition, and water.”

Now that Phase I is complete, the MIT team, including Conagen, advance to Phase II when they
hope to achieve purifying, scaling, and upcycling waste into valuable products.

An emphasis on professional services in Humen’s just-released e-commerce park standards

HUMEN, China, Dec. 8, 2021 /Xinhua-AsiaNet/– Humen E-Commerce Industrial Park (hereinafter referred to as “Park”), a flagship site of Dongguan, saw the opening of the Eighth Humen International E-Commerce Festival and the release of two official documents on December 3, 2021. The then-published Standards for the Supply Chain Administration in the Livestreaming Base and the Standards for Services in the E-Commerce Service Center are designed to spur the high-quality development of China’s e-commerce sector by coordinating with the Park’s equals across the country.

By leveraging the manufacturing strength of Dongguan and the fashion resources of Humen, the e-commerce feast has grown into an influential force behind the development of e-commerce in China.

“At this festival, the e-commerce giant Alibaba has worked with Humen to initiate an innovative model that integrates platforms for B2B, B2C, and domestic and overseas markets with a single region,” said Li Dingru, president of Humen E-Commerce Association, adding that the event would see a display of over 1,000 outstanding businesses in an exclusive e-commerce exhibition section.

“The Technical Committee on E-Commerce Industrial Park Standardization of Guangdong Province established its secretariat in the Park. And since then, the town has supported the Committee in formulating and revising four national standards, two local industry standards, and ten alliance (group) standards,” noted Wu Qingqiu, town mayor of Humen.

“Recent years have seen local governments going in for the building of e-commerce industrial parks that delivered benefits early on,” said Wang Wei, president of Humen E-Commerce Industrial Park. He believed that, however, given intensifying competition and increasing viewership costs, these e-commerce centers cannot stand out from the crowd just because of eye-catching products and the most notable online influencers and should shift their focus towards public services.

At this point, the Park is known to have created an industrial chain that describes the full array of activities needed to create a product or service, ranging from R&D and design and product testing to storage and platform operation to photography, art design, livestreaming marketing, and financing.

Humen has, in fact, inaugurated a host of public service platforms, such as CNTAC Testing Center (Humen), Humen Fashion Design & Research and Development Center, China Fabric Sample Warehouse Humen Brach, Humen E-Commerce Service Center, and 1840 Livestreaming Base. That means an emerging industrial landscape, where service providers cluster and e-commerce platforms join hands for common growth, has taken hold.

As to the future of the thriving sector in Humen, Wu believed that the fashion internet commerce frontrunner promises to go versatile by further embracing e-commerce applications in such areas as apparel, electronics, cables, tourism, and commerce. And this is how the town moves towards a critical hub for e-commerce platforms in southern China.
