Prime Minister to embark on visit to Egypt on Monday

Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif will be visiting Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt to participate in the Sharm El-Sheikh Climate Implementation Summit starting from Monday.

The Prime Minister will be accompanied by Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari and other cabinet members and senior officials.

This Summit is taking place as part of the 27th UN Climate Change Conference.

At the invitation of the Egyptian Presidency of COP-27, the Prime Minister would also co-Chair, along with his Norwegian counterpart, a high-level roundtable discussion on Climate Change and the sustainability of vulnerable communities on Tuesday.

The Prime Minister will also participate in other high-level events as a speaker, including the UN Secretary General’s roundtable to launch the Early Warning Systems for Executive Action Plan, and the Middle East Green Initiative Summit, being hosted by Crown Prince and Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia Mohammad bin Salman.

The Prime Minister is also scheduled to hold bilateral meetings with several world leaders on the margins of the Summit.

COP-27 is taking place at a time when millions of people in Pakistan, and millions more in other parts of the world, are facing severe adverse impacts of climate change.

As a developing country most affected by this phenomenon, Pakistan would make a robust call, inter alia, for urgency of climate solidarity and climate justice, based on the established principles of equity and common but differentiated responsibilities and respective capabilities.

The COP is the supreme decision making body under the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change which meets on annual basis to review and advance collective efforts to address climate change.

As a main stakeholder, Pakistan would continue to, proactively, make positive contributions to the global climate change debate, negotiations and collective action.

Pakistan appreciates EU’s assistance after climate-induced floods

Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari and Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Hina Rabbani Khar, met the European Union High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, and the Deputy Secretary General for Political Affairs, European External Action Service, Enrique Mora in UAE on Saturday.

The Foreign Minister expressed satisfaction over multifaceted relations between Pakistan and the European Union, which have strengthened over time.

He noted that recent interactions between the two sides including holding of Joint Commission in Islamabad last month and the visit of the members of the European Parliament this week, have maintained positive momentum in bilateral ties.

The Foreign Minister also appreciated the humanitarian assistance of 133 million Euros by the EU and its member states to Pakistan after the devastation caused by the recent climate-induced floods.

He apprised the EU High Representative of the enormous task Pakistan is faced with on account of rehabilitation and reconstruction work.

He called on the international community to rise to the occasion and ensure climate justice for Pakistan.

The High Representative assured full support to the Foreign Minister in meeting the daunting challenge.

The Foreign Minister and the EU High Representative also discussed the GSP Plus – a scheme mutually beneficial for both Pakistan and the European Union.

The Foreign Minister hoped that Pakistan and the EU would continue to benefit from it and it’s successor dispensation in the future as well.

The High Representative lauded Pakistan’s progress in implementing the international conventions that are part of the GSP plus scheme.

The Foreign Minister urged the High Representative that the EU should delist Pakistan at the soonest possible from its list of countries having strategic deficiencies in their AML CFT regimes, after Pakistan exited the FATF grey list last month.

The High Representative appreciated Pakistan’s remarkable progress in completing the two FATF Action Plans and assured the Foreign Minister that the EU would delist Pakistan soon.

Both sides agreed to further strengthen Pakistan-EU relations and to remain engaged, inter alia, with established institutional mechanisms.

Govt decides to take legal action against law perpetrators

The federal government has decided to use its powers against incidents of damaging government properties and buildings, violent activities and baseless allegations on state institutions.

The decision was taken during an important meeting presided by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif in Lahore on Saturday.

The forum decided that in the light of ISPR’s statement, legal action will be taken against the statements of Imran Khan and his colleagues against the state and institutions.

A committee consisting of constitutional and legal experts was formed to suggest legal actions.

Separate legal actions will be taken against people involved in burning and damaging Governor House Punjab and other government properties in different cities.

Further it was decided that legal action will also be taken against attacks by PTI leaders and workers on private property.

PM demands constitution of full court commission to probe Wazirabad incident

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has request to the Chief Justice of Pakistan for constituting a full court commission to probe into the Wazirabad incident.

Addressing a news conference in Lahore on Saturday evening, the Prime Minister said that he will soon write a letter to the Chief Justice Supreme Court of Pakistan in this regard.

Shehbaz Sharif said he will also request the Chief Justice of Pakistan that the same commission should also investigate the murder of senior journalist, Arshad Sharif.

He said the Federal government will extend complete cooperation to this commission.

He said that the nation deserves the right to know the fact and it is need of the hour to ascertain the reality in order to eradicate anarchy sabotage related activities in the society.

While condemning the politics of Imran Khan, the Prime Minister said Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf Chairman has been continuing the malicious campaign against institutions, which is helping to fulfil the enemy’s agenda.

He said Pakistan’s Armed forces have rendered matchless sacrifices in the war against terrorism.

He said the PTI chief is misleading the nation by levelling false allegations, spreading propaganda and speaking blatant lies.

The Prime Minister said the PTI government registered fake cases against its political opponents.

Condemning the Wazirabad incident of firing on PTI’s Long March, the Prime Minister said that the Interior Ministry has been directed to investigate the incident.

He said that as the security of the Long March is responsibility of the Punjab government, however, it is a big question mark that no FIR has been registered so far.

The Prime Minister raised the question that why Imran Khan was taken to Shaukat Khanum Hospital immediately after the Wazirabad incident.

He said extremism in the politics cannot be tolerated and the levelling baseless allegations on institutions should also be stopped.

He said Imran Khan used the killing of senior journalist Arshad Sharif for political objectives and also used religious card against his political opponents.

Shehbaz Sharif also prayed for early recovery of PTI chief Imran Khan and other injured persons.

Meanwhile, in a tweet, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said that the government has decided to request honorable Chief Justice of Pakistan to form a full court commission to investigate PTI Chief Imran Khan’s allegations.

He said Imran Khan Niazi habitually uses baseless allegations and lies to spread anarchy.

The Prime Minister said under this investigation let the people see through Imran Khan’s game plan to undermine national institutions.

World Tsunami Awareness Day being observed today

World Tsunami Awareness Day is being observed today with an aim to raise awareness and enhance international cooperation to effectively counter the tsunamis.

This year the theme of the days is “Early Warning and Early Action Before Every Tsunami: Building partnerships and leveraging data to ensure no one is left behind”.

It is highlighted here that in the past 100 years, Tsunamis have claimed more than 260,000 lives. The highest number of deaths in that period was in the Indian Ocean tsunami of December 2004. It caused an estimated 227,000 fatalities in 14 countries, with Indonesia, Sri Lanka, India and Thailand hardest-hit.

Putin endorses evacuation of Ukraine’s Kherson region

Russian President Vladimir Putin has endorsed the evacuation of civilians from parts of Ukraine’s southern Kherson region.

The statement came amid conflicting reports of a curfew being imposed in the Russian-controlled area.

Vladimir Putin said those who live in Kherson should be removed from the zone of the most dangerous actions, because the civilian population should not suffer.

Meanwhile, Ukraine has termed the evacuations as forced relocation of civilians and a war-crime.

Ukrainian President meets with US National Security Advisor in Kiev

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has met with visiting US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan in Kiev to discuss further US support for Ukraine.

According to the Zelenskyy’s press service, the parties talked about US assistance for Ukraine in the defense sector, and the ways to increase Ukraine’s capabilities to protect critical infrastructure.

It further said, Zelenskyy and Sullivan also discussed financial and humanitarian support for Ukraine and strengthening sanctions against Russia over the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
